New Jersey
Exploration of land started in 1609 off the coasts and bays of New Jersey by Sir
Henry Hudson. Part of the state was settled by Dutch and Swedish as New
Netherland and New Sweden. In 1664 the entire area was given up to the British
and given its name. That same year, James, the Duke of York, granted land to two
of his friends, Lord Berkely and Sir George Carteret, which was New Jersey. On
December 18, 1787 New Jersey became the third state in the United States, and
ratified the Contstitution. Today the states population is about 8,800,900. In New
Jersey they have 2 U.S. Senators, Frank R. Lautenberg and Robert Menendez
. There are 13 representatives, one for each district. In order their names are; Robert
E. Andrews, Frank LoBiondo, Jon Runyan, Chris Smith, Scott Garrett, Frank Pallone
Jr., Leonard Lance,Bill Pascrell Jr., Steven Rothman, Donald M. Payne, Rodney
Frelinghuysen, Rush D. Holt Jr., and Albio Sires. Some of New Jerseys Major
Industries are: Pharmacueticals, Chemical Development, Telecommunication, Food
Processing and Tourism.
